3d Walls

Coding and various related things go here. Probably the driest section of the board.

3d Walls

Postby HeroOfHyla » 13 Jun 2009, 06:39

Working on a 3d walls script that I may wind up implementing in Plague. Unfortunately, I think I'd wind up needing totally top-down sprites for the characters to make it work well together, unless I do 3d models for the characters (less likely!). It works fairly well so far, I just have a few things I need to do:
  • Remove lag when lots of walls are displayed on screen - If my computer with an ATI Radeon HD 4870 and 8 GM of RAM gets bad lag, it's gonna be terrible for lesser comps. When I display a 120x1024 room all at once with about 40% of the tiles walls, i get about 17 fps right now, when it's supposed to be 30 fps. However, I won't be doing screens that large in-game, so it shouldn't be as much of a problem.
  • Try to fix some depth issues with multiple views. Right now if you display 2 copies of the room on screen at the same time with different resolutions, the depth on the smaller-res one will be messed up if the larger one reaches the edge of the room.
  • Add "sticker" support. Stickers include anything like cracks, paintings, windows, etc, that are just graphics to decorate walls.

Final resolution will probably be 320x240 at double scale

Sticker support/etc is all done now. I am not quite sure if I will be actually using this in the game, because it has certain limitations.

I'm pretty sure I will not be using this system in Plague. Sprites simply don't look very good on 3d backgrounds, unless the backgrounds are prerendered. Spriting all the way will probably be the way to go.

Thats a shame, maybe it could be used on another game however.
The way you've done the graphics for it would make it look good as a Horror game of some kind.

Actually, it's given me an idea of sorts.
How about a horror maze like game?

Although, I think the top down look wouldn't work as well as it could for a scary game.

Yeah, I think scary games are best in first-person or over-the-shoulder third person.

Yeah, its a shame.
Isn't there a way to change camera angle?

Not the way it's currently set up. Wouldn't be too hard to set it up tho i suppose.

I've been thinking about it, and I might use a modified version of this script in dungeons.

Hopefully with a rotateable camera :D

The more I think about a rotated camera, the more conflicted I am. I think a 3/4 view like final fantasy 1-6 is the ideal camera angle for an RPG, but that view makes it impossible to view what's on the east and west facing walls of the maps. A rotating camera could fix that, but it would mean all buildings would have to either be 3d rendered or have totally flat roofs :\
